Background

Below is a table for sunrise and sunset and moonrise and moonset for Paradise, Mt. Rainier NP. For the month of Month 2008 the azimuth of sunrise and sunset moves northward 100 to 83 degree true north, which is between east-northeast east, and sunset moves northward from 260 to 278 degrees true north, which is between west-northwest and west during the month, respectively.

The table of moonrise and moonset azimuth for Seattle is available for March 2009. The difference between Seattle (shown in table) and Mt. Rainier is relatively minor and can be adjusted in the field.

Sun and Moon times

Please note that while the sun/moon rise and set times are correct, the light and actual visibility of sunrise and sunset varies due to Mt. Rainier itself, sun/moonrise later on the west side and sun/moonset earlier on the east side. In addition the local terrain around your location will change the light and actually visibility of each.

Below are some Web-based calculators for sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset and sunrise/sunset azimuth. For what it's worth, knowing your exact location in the NP isn't that critical as you can use the calculation for Seattle, Washington to be sufficient close to make any minor adjustments in the field. Otherwise, Paradise is 46.77 ° north 121.73 ° west and the crest of Mt. Rainier is 46.85 ° north and 121.76 ° west for exact calculations.
